A contemporary realist painter, Gibbs' work captures subjects moving through, or floating in, colour-infused, dreamlike spaces and landscapes. Optimistically rendering the slow movement of these figures through time and space, Gibbs attempts to materialise in paint the ongoing psychical connections between the inner self and the world around us.
Gibbs' latest work focusses on the human form within the landscape. The figure is seen as displaced, and alien to the land. Challenging familiarity, Gibbs marvels at the wonder and the strangeness of the body.
Gibbs has exhibited widely in Adelaide and Melbourne, including a recent show at George Paton Gallery. He was a finalist for the 2011 and 2012 Metro Arts Prize, the 2012 Margaret Lawrence Travelling Scholarship, and a winner of the 2012 Rosetta Kelly Environmental Art Award.
