Tony Nguyen’s figurative painting practice focusses on
contemporary possibilities for reviving classical portraiture. Rather than
painting subjects from life, Nguyen spends a long time working photographically
with his subjects, who themselves are all artists, to capture a fleeting moment
and image which represents their intensity, beauty and own aesthetic concerns
and choices.
Working both with traditional Alla prima and Flemish oil painting techniques, Nguyen renders the image in soft hues of paint, somehow suspending his subjects between a nostalgic past and vital presence.
