For
Christine Fontana art is a vehicle for story-telling, and the stories she
chooses to tell reduce the emotional experience of love down to its political,
philosophical and scientific bones. Emphasising the maternal/child relationship
as the foundation of social infrastructure, her imagery references specific
maternal narratives that challenge sentimentality and explore the clinical and
social psychology behind that relationship.
Using varied drawing techniques, painting,
animation/film, traditional handcrafts and ceramics to create both two-dimensional
works and sculptural installations, she encourages a narrative interaction
between the personal and the documentary. Attempting to identify how our
stories fail us, her philosophical ambition is to find a way to
revision our relationship to the greater social environment.
